The Ecohydrology team investigates the interaction between abiotic and biotic factors, with a strong focus on the relationship between groundwater and vegetation. After all, a large part of nature in Flanders is dependent on groundwater. In ecohydrological studies, we conduct extensive area analysis to understand the entire ecosystem functioning. We also map environmental pressures (such as desiccation, eutrophication and pollution) and formulate targeted (eco)hydrological recovery measures. Furthermore, we conduct research into the abiotic requirements (soil, water) of species and communities, and we focus on groundwater models. Qualitative (long-term)monitoring of groundwater dynamics and chemistry is a crucial part of all these activities and is made available through our WATINA database. In this way, we provide scientific support for nature policy, with the aim of bringing nature in Flanders to a favourable state and maintaining it there.
