Geert De Knijf is als aquatisch ecoloog werkzaam aan het Instituut voor Natuur en Bosonderzoek bij het Team Zoetwaterhabitats waar hij betrokken is bij allerlei watergebonden projecten. Onderzoeksonderwerpen zijn onder meer beoordeling van Vlaamse waterlichamen op basis van aquatische biota, herstelmaatregelen van stilstaande en stromende wateren, de effecten van aquatische invasieve soorten op inheemse soorten en systemen. Daarnaast is Geert ook betrokken bij het opstellen van monitoringsprogramma’s voor soorten, opmaak van Rode Lijsten, Europees bedreigde soorten en habitattypes. Geert heeft een zeer uitgebreide kennis opgebouwd over de ecologie, habitatvereisten, bescherming, monitoring, biogeografie en vele andere aspecten van libellen (Odonata) niet alleen van België maar van Europa, Noord-Afrika en het Midden-Oosten. Geert is tevens actief in de Dragonfly Specialist Group van IUCN.
