Research expertise

Jeroen started in 2007 as a vegetation ecologist at the Research Institute for Nature and Forest, with a special focus on the use of remote sensing for vegetation mapping and assessment. He participated in several regional, national and European (FP7) research projects on the topic. His current work focuses on the scientific underpinning and evaluation of the Flemish Natura 2000 policies, including the Programmatic Approch to Nitrogen to abate the effects of nitrogen deposition on protected nature in Flanders. Jeroen coordinates the Flemish contribution to the six-yearly Belgian report to the European Commission on the conservation status of European protected habitat types (article 17 Habitats Directive), and the Standard Data Forms on the Flemish Natura 2000 sites. He also serves as the Flemish representative in the EU Expert Group on Reporting under the Nature Directives.
