Personal profile

Research expertise

Tim is a conservation ecologist at INBO, the Flemish Research Institute on biodiversity. He is coordinating invasive species in the Wildlife Management and Invasive Species team. His research is focused on surveillance, monitoring and open data, risk assessment, impact, risk management, ecosystem restoration and human dimensions. His job is on the interface of science and policy and he provides a lot of policy advice on invasive species. Working with stakeholders in a community of practice on invasion management is a daily part of his job. Current research topics include, among others, sustainable control of invasive mammals, amphibians and birds, horizon scanning and risk assessment, pathway analysis, early detection systems, rapid eradication and monitoring of various taxa, invasive species recording using citizen science.

Research expertise

Tim Adriaens is a senior scientist at INBO. He is the focal point for invasive species matters and coordinates invasive species activities throughout the scientific community. His expertise covers horizon scanning, risk assessment and risk management, cost-benefit analysis, IAS impacts and monitoring. Tim is accustomed to liaising with organizations and institutions in the field of invasive species research, management and policy and provides expertise and support in relation to invasive species management. Current invasion biology research topics include, among others, risk assessment, best management practices, eradication and control of invasive vertebrate populations, invasive weeds, invasive species recording through citizen science, management prioritisation, etc. He is deeply involved in the implementation of the European IAS Regulation in Belgium, more notably in setting up surveillance, early warning and management of IAS. Tim coordinated the European-funded Invexo (Invasive Species in Flanders and the Netherlands) and RINSE (Reducing the Impact of Invasive Non-Native Species in Europe) projects on invasive species management and policy. He was involved as a vertebrate expert in the EU Horizon Scanning (EU ENV.B.2/ETU/2014/0016), is an active contributor to the COST Action Alien Challenge (TD1209) and the IAS working group at EU level. With the other members of the TrIAS core team Tim co-organized an Alien Challenge workshop on data interoperability for invasive species.
