Artificial light at night: A review on the effects on biodiversity

Project Details

Artificial light at night (ALAN) poses a threat to biodiversity. For example, it fragments the landscape for nocturnal organisms, the biorhythm of diurnal organisms is disrupted, even plants can experience negative effects. This causes disturbances of ecological balances and populations decline. How should we deal with ALAN and what are possible mitigating measures? The necessary knowledge is very scattered. With a literature review we want to bundle the knowledge about ALAN, ranging from bacteria to vertebrates and plants, into a well-organized book. This book can then be used as a guideline to develop biodiversity-friendly lighting plans.
