Ecosystem restoration Sigma plan (Scheldt-estuary)

Project Details

Abstract

In addition to system monitoring and evaluation, INBO also monitors nature restoration and system restoration in the Port of Antwerp and monitoring within the framework of the Sigma Plan. We provide advisory expertise in compensation dossiers and work on the concept of “temporary nature”. Our clients primarily want ad hoc support for the files and project implementation (their main objective) based on monitoring results.
The Sigma Plan is the largest nature restoration project in Flanders and a unique open-air laboratory. Here, experience is being gained with large-scale nature restoration in severely degraded systems in a region with limited basic nature quality.
In the Scheldt Valley, a number of initiatives by the Flemish government are being rolled out, including the Sigma Plan (climate adaptation), Blue Deal projects, pilot areas for the roll-out of water level decisions and, last but not least, the creation of a functional ecological network within the new Scheldt Valley National Park.
