Abstract
For several years now, the Roeselare-Leie canal has been struggling with a cyanobacteria problem during the summer period, preventing certain uses (including recreation). In the short term, De Vlaamse Waterweg nv wants to make a section of the canal free of blue-green algae via ultrasonic techniques. This technique is claimed by its developers to be highly effective in suppressing cyanobacteria but the scientific basis for that claim does not extend beyond the lab. For the first time, its application in a field situation is being investigated while also identifying its potential ecological impact.
