Evaluation of fish safety of eel VAHO pump. Test conducted in experimental setup at company Van Hooste prior to installation in Woumen (Blankaart) (EVINBO)

Project Details

Abstract

The issue of river network fragmentation and the importance of restoration for fish migration is described in numerous policy documents, directives and decrees.
Water managers in Flanders, including the Flemish Environment Agency (VMM), need to switch to more fish-safe pumps and jacks. For this study, VMM is asking the firm Van Hooste (mechanics and water control) to install pumps in Woumen (Diksmuide) between the Blankaart area and the IJzer. This installation must be fish safe, in implementation of the European Water Framework Directive, the European Eel Management Plan (EG/1100/2007) and the Benelux decision on free fish migration. Fish safety must be demonstrated prior to production on the basis of scientific research. INBO carries out the scientific evaluation.
