Genetic screening of brook lamprey populations

Project Details

Abstract

With this project, we aim to identify and map the genetic background of Flemish brook lamprey populations. This will give us insight into the general genetic diversity and structure of these populations, enabling us to determine whether translocations are necessary. By identifying suitable source populations (with high genetic diversity) and populations eligible for restocking (with low genetic diversity and inbreeding), the results can also be used to develop a strategy for the breeding programme and the associated introductions and restocking. In this way, we aim to increase the chances of success of reintroductions, restocking and translocations.
