Abstract
Nature and Forest requests a genetic study of the Flemish (meta)populations of the pool frog , with subsequent recommendations and measures to ensure a favourable conservation status of the species in Flanders.
The purpose of genetically studying populations consists of determining the current state of species purity of the populations, and estimating the genetic variation within and between several (sub)populations.
This allows to:
1) test whether certain populations have reduced genetic diversity compared to reference populations (populations in a favourable conservation status)
2) to examine whether we can speak of a genetic bottleneck
3) to determine to what extent there is genetic exchange between neighbouring subpopulations
4) to determine the potential for sustainable survival by estimating and comparing the effective size of populations using genetic criteria.
