Monitoring valley Drie Beken - hydrological part (EVINBO)

Project Details

Abstract

In the vallei van de drie beken between Tessenderlo and Diest, a discussion has been going on for years about the remediation of a historic pollution of soil and surface water and of the wet valley floors as a result of discharges from what used to be Tessenderlo Chemie, now Umicore. At INBO, we have been involved for a long time in the demonstration of this pollution. We also installed the hydrological monitoring network for this purpose.
The company's long-term discharges led to the cessation of discharges after a great deal of discussion. Discussions about the remediation of the heavily polluted watercourses, mainly the Winterbeek and the Hulpe, led to their remediation in 2018-19.
ANB wants to check if those remediations are having the desired effect. INBO will interpret hydrological data, such as soil and surface water levels and soil and surface water chemistry.
