Nature Restoration Law: Smart image processing to support the monitoring of habitats and living areas

Abstract

AI-driven smart image processing of (new) data (aerial photographs, LiDAR, satellite) is developing rapidly. More and more high-resolution data (10*10 metres or finer) are becoming available, sometimes with a very short repetition frequency, such as Sentinel every 5 days. In addition, more techniques are available to convert these data into information. This project supports the mapping of regionally important biotopes. We know that these Regionally Important Biotopes (RIBs) are incomplete, especially outside the Natura 2000 areas. AI will develop an indicative opportunity map for RBB grasslands so that the actual mapping can be done more efficiently. In addition, the possibility of recognising other habitats and RBBs (such as scrubland) is being explored, as well as whether it is possible to monitor certain indicators for the Local State of Conservation (LSVI) across the entire area (e.g. grass encroachment).
