Abstract

In 2005, the Netherlands and Flanders (Flemish Community and Flemish Region) signed a treaty on cooperation in the field of policy and management of the Scheldt estuary. Following this treaty, which entered into force on 1 October 2008, the Flemish-Dutch Scheldt Commission (VNSC) was established.

The VNSC focuses on the development of the Scheldt Estuary as a 'multifunctional estuarine water system that is used in a sustainable manner for human needs'. The common objectives are: flood protection, optimal maritime accessibility to the Scheldt harbours, maintenance of a healthy and dynamic ecosystem and joint scientific research.

Within the framework of the UNSC, the evaluation of system functioning is developed within the Research and Monitoring (R&M) working group on the basis of research and the implementation of the ongoing monitoring programme MONEOS. It is within this working group Research and Monitoring that INBO actively participates in the objectives formulated by the VNSC.
