Abstract
Following the decision to accelerate the energy transition towards greater energy independence, additional offshore wind capacity in Belgian territorial waters is being sought in the revision of the Marine Spatial Plan (MRP 2020-2026) in order to aim for a total of 8 GW of installed capacity.
As also indicated in the Belgian programme of measures for Natura 2000 and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive 2008/56/EC (measure 9d), it is essential to have risk maps showing the expected impact of human activities on the birds present when examining the possibilities of increasing offshore energy capacity. In addition, it is also important to have sufficient knowledge of possible mitigation measures in order to achieve a sustainable Marine Spatial Plan.
INBO will develop risk maps and describe possible mitigation measures for seabirds to support the revision of the Marine Spatial Plan (MRP 2020-2026) and in implementation of the Belgian programme of measures for Natura 2000 and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive 2008/56/EC (measures 9d and 9e).
