Stone marten damage

The stone marten has become widespread again in Flanders after a period of increase during the 1990s. The presence of this mustelid is mainly associated with damage to vehicles and buildings. Vehicle damage can be prevented by taking the appropriate preventive measures that are reasonably expected according to the Code of Good Practice. In terms of buildings, it is also possible to deter martens. Unfortunately, by the time a stone marten is driven away, considerable damage and nuisance has often already occurred. Preventively protecting buildings is a sensitive issue, as it often involves significant investments and sometimes requires personalized advice. It is essential to gain insight into the current extent and distribution of damage. In addition, cost-effective preventive measures are currently unknown.
