SUMO: Survival and Movements of the NW European Sandwich Tern population (EVINBO)

Project Details

Abstract

Several species of seabirds were hit hard during the 2022 breeding season in Europe due to avian flu in Europe. Sandwich tern was one of the hardest-hit species with a quarter of breeding birds found dead in colonies in the Netherlands, among others.
The new German 'Nationales Artenhilfsprogramm' (National Species Aid Programme) of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) is investing in projects that will generate additional knowledge about this species in the short term. This knowledge is then used to set up protection programmes, to assess the consequences of bird flu and to take measures to avoid a repeat of this catastrophe in the future.
