Abstract

Levees primarily hold back water, but they also have ecological potential as habitats and corridors. Their combined area of more than 1,000 ha constitutes the largest contiguous grassland in Flanders, which is also expanding considerably with the implementation of the Updated Sigma Plan. There is now great variation in ecological value, erosion resistance and maintenance cost. We propose guidelines for design and management of levees that optimally combine both functions with an acceptable maintenance cost. We also translate these guidelines spatially into a management proposal for the levees of the Zenne, Dijle and Demer rivers (district 4).
