Abstract

The primary function of buffer strips is to protect water quality from negative influences from agriculture. They are therefore an important part of manure policy, water policy and agricultural policy. Due to their positive impact on water quality, buffer strips also have a positive impact on aquatic biodiversity. Can buffer strips contribute to nature restoration? Does this require a specific design or management approach that does not undermine their primary function? Can they also offer additional benefits for farmers?
