Abstract
The nutritient status of a 70 years old Scots Pine stand at Brasschaat in 1988-1997 was investigated by means of repeated foliar analysis. From the results it appears that a phosphorus and a magnesium shortage occurs at this site. The nitrogen and sulphur concentrations in the needles are high. This high nitrogen concentration may result in a shortage of phosphorus, potassium and magnesium at higher concentrations than in a situation with a normal nitrogen supply. Especially the ratio of magnesium to nitrogen indicates a nutritional imbalance for this element. The high sulphur concentration in the needles is probably due to the immissions originating from the industrial area of Antwerp. In 1991 the relationship between nutrient concentrations and needle loss was investigated. However a clear relationship could not be detected. The decrease in the needle concentrations of potassium and magnesium and their ratio to nitrogen is in line with the declining trend in the soil solution. Together with the results of the deposition monitoring at Brasschaat, these results support the hypothesis that atmospheric deposition may act as an important factor in the development of nutrient shortages and nutrient imbalances in forests.
