Abstract
This report draws up a framework for weighing up which approach is most appropriate for the 88 invasive alien species on the Union list (extended to include some other species). The different policy tools are prevention (limited here to the prohibition of intentional acts), rapid response (for absent or limited species), regular management (based on site managers' responsibilities), and activated management (notably through the creation of management regimes). Each of the species covered is given a place on this spectrum. Because resources are limited, management and policy have to make choices. Efforts against widespread species should prioritise species with significant impacts on wildlife interests and reasonable prospects for action. Where the impact of a species is partly outside the nature sector, cooperation is necessary.
