    Abstract

Ground and tiger beetles (Carabidae) are amongst the most popular, diversified and best studied invertebrates of Flanders. One of the first detailed distribution atlases and Red Data books of invertebrates of Flanders was based on representatives of this beetle family. By now, these publications date respectively from 1986 (Desender 1986a,b,c,d) and 1995 (Desender et al. 1995).
Since then, the number of sampling campaigns on ground beetles, especially by means of pitfall traps, has strongly increased. After more than 20 years, there is an urgent need to produce a new distribution atlas, along with an update of the more than 10 years old Red Data book.
Here we discuss how a new database was constructed and what the possibilities and advantages of this database are. The database counts almost 200.000 records of ground and tiger beetles in Belgium (UTM5km scale).
So far, 404 species are known from Belgium and 382 of them have been observed in Flanders. The distribution maps of all 404 species were constructed and are presented here.
