Abstract

In the Blankaart river basin in Woumen (Diksmuide), there is a pumping station on the Stenensluisvaart canal that pumps water to the Yser, along which fish also migrate. This pumping station had two screw or axial pumps that were very harmful to passing fish. Following the switch to fish-friendly pumps and screw conveyors, the company “Van Hooste” developed an axial pump, the VaHo pump, which was attributed with fish-friendly characteristics. The aim of this study was to carry out a quantitative evaluation of the effects of the VaHo pump on eels.
With a mortality rate of 1%, the tests show that the VaHo pump meets the requirement of less than 10% mortality and can therefore be labelled as eel-safe. This report cannot make any statements about fish safety for other fish species.
