Abstract

The re-meandering of the Zwarte Beek in 2016–2017 appears to have had a net positive effect on habitat quality and the associated fish communities by 2024. As communities need time to adapt to the conditions created by restoration works, monitoring over a longer period is crucial.
To achieve a greater impact and realise even greater gains in the ecological restoration of the Zwarte Beek, further large-scale active restoration measures in heavily degraded sections are desirable, prior to the recommended passive river restoration.
