Abstract
During the summer of 2022, INBO and the West Flanders Intercommunale made a new vegetation map of the Doornpanne dune area in Koksijde. This was commissioned by the drinking water company Aquaduin.
Since 1993, we observed some important trends in the vegetation: the decline of sparsely vegetated, open dunes by 55%, the decline of creeping Salix repens thicket by 92%, an expansion of other dune thicket by 30%.
Spontaneous development increased deciduous forest area by 20% , despite the felling of non-native poplars and abels.
Although grazing management has been in place since 1996, the number of plant species in the dune grasslands is not increasing. We even see a decline of some typical species such as common rock-rose, broad-leaved thyme and squincywort.
The main management challenge is the removal of invasive alien plant species.
