Abstract

In 2024, the breeding of river trout switched to a new breeding group from the Geul, a tributary of the Meuse. This line consists of three age groups.
In this Geul line, the genetic diversity and effective number of parent fish in the first group of offspring (2023) is low. The later groups (2024 and 2025) show a significantly higher diversity, partly thanks to additional parent fish. The first group differs greatly from the other two in genetic terms.
In order to strengthen the genetic basis of the Geul line, we recommend supplementing the first group (2023) with individuals from the later groups. Regular new inflows into the breeding group can further support diversity. Genetic monitoring of releases remains crucial for evaluating and adjusting the success of recovery measures.
