Abstract

This report describes a revision of the critical loads for eutrophication and acidification according to the simple mass balance (SMB) method. These critical loads are used to determine regional indicators of the impact of eutrophication and acidification on terrestrial ecosystems in Flanders in order to support, among other things, Flemish air policy. The critical loads in the current study, calculated using the mass balance method, differ from the critical loads (CDVs) for nitrogen for Flemish Natura 2000 habitats of European importance.
The ultimate goal of the critical loads in this study differs from the CDVs for nitrogen, where the preservation of habitat quality is central. The critical loads calculated using the SMB can be considered as the threshold at which an ecosystem evolves from a closed to an open (disturbed) nutrient cycle.
