Abstract

Brownfield greening – the transformation of abandoned or contaminated urban sites into green spaces – breathes new life into land that has often been neglected for years. Current brownfield policy instruments focus on economic reuse, whilst there is also a need for tools to facilitate greening. In particular, undeveloped sites and former landfill sites in urban contexts, which are already showing signs of spontaneous greening, offer a unique opportunity for low-cost, low-risk greening with clear benefits for biodiversity, health and the climate. To harness this potential, a broader inventory, specific programmes, targeted funding and better cooperation between institutions are required.
