Abstract

Our study shows statistically that with zero management of invasive knotweed, surface expansion is on average as fast as with low-frequency mowing management. However, mowing management results varied more than zero management. We observed both shrinkage and increase. The outcome of mowing management is very difficult to predict. In addition, we also investigated manual uprooting. We recommend the use of manual uprooting mainly to control recent populations.
Proactive and careful work is necessary. For established patches, we recommend maintaining zero management where possible. If mowing management is desirable, take extra care to avoid spreading fragments.
