Abstract

Land-bound, circular dairy farming involves working with closed nitrogen management as much as possible. This means that cattle feed is grown on the farm as much as possible, as little artificial fertiliser as possible is used and mainly manure from own animals is used. This approach has a major positive effect on reducing nitrogen pressure per hectare, the main determining factor for achieving nature goals.
These results confirm what earlier literature showed. Closed-loop farming offers dairy farmers opportunities to become more sustainable and economically stronger. Although milk production may decrease, cost savings and higher milk prices, e.g. through labels, can compensate for this. With smart management and entrepreneurship, circular farming can strengthen both farm profitability and sustainability.
