Abstract

Since 2012, the Kallemoeie-Papelenvijver in Nazareth has been used as a dumping site for dredged material, an activity that will continue for twenty years, after which it will become a nature reserve. During this period, monitoring will take place to track any disturbances to flora and fauna.

Recent research shows that, as in previous years, the lake is affected by cyanobacterial blooms due to high nutrient levels. The aquatic vegetation is sparse, dominated by algae. Although there has been a slight increase in submerged vegetation and its maximum depth has improved, abundances remain low. A positive development is the return of Chara contraria. However, the reforestation of the banks with willows and the decline in water reeds are cause for concern.

Water bird monitoring (1996-2024) counted 67 species. Notable is the increase in Egyptian geese and gadwalls, and a decrease in pochards and coots.
