Abstract

Floating water plantain is the only aquatic plant found in Flanders that is listed in Annex II of the Habitats Directive and is therefore strictly protected. Since 2008, the population size at known locations of floating water plantain in Flanders has been monitored, and since 2016, the Local Conservation Status (LCS) has also been determined for each population.

The Flemish populations are generally small and fluctuate considerably. Only a limited number of sites meet all the requirements for a favorable conservation status. The current six-year cycle appears insufficient to detect trends and threats in a timely manner. Triennial monitoring is recommended.
