Abstract

Despite the formulation of conservation objectives, not all objectives were met in any year until 2023. Mainly due to the limited size of the breeding area, which was always much smaller than the predetermined 22 ha, and due to high predation and disturbance pressure from land predators, terns did not get a chance to sustain themselves in special protection area for birds at the western outer harbour level. Certain shorebirds such as Kentish plover, common ringed plover, yellow-legged gull, crested lark and northern wheatear disappeared (almost) from Zeebrugge and thus mostly from Flanders as well. The populations of lesser black-backed gull and European herring gull also declined sharply.
