Abstract

From 8 March to 13 May 2022, we checked whether modified sluice management resulted in a higher number of glass eels being introduced. We observed a significant increase in the number of glass eels introduced when the weir was opened by 5 cm when the water level on the sea side was higher than on the polder side. We therefore recommend the implementation of adapted sluice management with one slide at 5 cm at the Veurnes sluice to allow glass eels to access the Nieuwpoort-Dunkirk canal (and also the Lovaart which is in open connection) as a rearing area. As a precautionary measure, a possible increase in conductivity should be guarded against when implementing the adapted sluice management, in consultation with the various stakeholders.
