Abstract
From 8 March to 13 May 2022, we applied adjusted sluice management at the Gravensas on the Ganzepoot. In doing so, we set one of the two gates of the filler sewers ajar when the water on the sea side of the sluice gates was higher than on the polder side.
This study showed a significant increase in the number of glass eels let in when the filling sewers of the Gravensas were opened once the water on the sea side of the lock was higher than on the polder side.
We recommend to achieve and maximise glass eel colonisation through the Plassendalesluis lock at Oudenburg of the Ghent-Ostend canal, four kilometres upstream of the lock complex sas Slijkens, instead of through adapted sluice management at the Gravensas.
