Abstract

In and around the port of Antwerp are wetlands with many birds. However, when applying for new wind turbines, there were knowledge gaps on bird flights and possible impacts on bird populations. The Flemish Ecology Energy Environment Enterprise (VLEEMO NV) is working to fill these gaps with 3D radar research on the impact of existing and planned wind turbines on birds and bats.
Radar detects bird movements well, but classification of bird species proves complex. Validation of radar data with field observations and development of improved algorithms remains necessary. The possibility of deploying AI is also being explored. The study provides valuable insights into the flight movements of birds and bats to develop mitigation measures to minimise the impact of wind turbines on birds and bats.
