Abstract
Autochthonous trees and shrubs play an important role in multifunctional climate-resilient forest management. They are an important part of biodiversity in our forests. Forest plants with an autochthonous Flemish origin are sold under the ‘Plant van Hier’ quality label, a certification mark from the Agency for Nature and Forests. To guarantee the origin of the plantation trees, we developed a DNA database of genetic profiles of possible parent trees.
The method we work out here, which is based on an extensive DNA database, is currently unique within Europe.
We found high genetic diversity for all but one species. The DNA database is also an aid for seed orchard management and ex situ conservation of genetic diversity.
