Abstract

This report concludes the ANB assignment “Initiating a public debate on broadening the definition of native”. We propose broadening the definition of native tree species for Flanders to an umbrella term with two complementary forms: historically native tree species and newly native tree species.
Traditionally, nature conservation has been based on a framework of native versus non-native species; climate change is shifting the focus to the conservation of resilient, climate-resistant ecosystems, with additional attention to the functional role of species.
The proposed broadened definition for tree species still needs to be tested against other species groups, the existing framework of nature targets and the approach in neighbouring countries. In order to periodically compile the (dynamic) list of newly native tree species for Flanders, in-depth analyses with distribution models and climate envelopes of species linked to local soil conditions are needed, as is an assessment of the species-specific risks of invasion, hybridisation and loss of biodiversity.
