European threatened bryophytes in Flanders and Europe: a miniature world in decline.

The first European IUCN Red list of Bryophytes was published in september 2019. The publication describes the Red List status of 1817 bryophyte species for Europe and the European Union (EU 28). Of this list 22 vulenrable or threatened and 17 near threatened species occur or occurred in Flanders. In this paper we give a comparison between the Red List status in Flanders and the status in Europe and the European Union. Hotspots of European Red List species in Flanders are concentrated in the Campine region and specially in an area with old fish ponds in the center of the province of Limburg (‘vijvergebied Midden-Limburg’). Periodical draining of the ponds is essential for the long-term survival of the threatened species. Another important area for European threatened bryophytes is the nature reserve ‘Buitengoor’ in Mol consisting of rich fens.
