Surface water is of disproportionate importance to biodiversity and ecosystem services. By conducting research into relationships between the water-based biotic community, the abiotic environment and human influences, the ecology of individual species, changes over time and reference images, the Freshwater Habitats team helps formulate differentiated objectives, quality assessment, reporting and restoration and management practices for standing and running waters in Flanders. Its focus is on significant but somewhat less accessible biota (aquatic plants including stoneworts, diatoms, certain invertebrates, etc.) and in particular on flora and fauna enjoying European protection.
