Abstract

Beech martens can cause nuisance, with their use of roof spaces in people’s homes as a den or nest having an enormous impact on the affected party. Making the roof space inaccessible may solve the problem, but it may also merely shift it to another local resident. Offering alternative shelters that are more attractive for nesting than existing nesting sites in homes could solve this problem. For the application of this measure in the future, it is important to find out (1) how this approach can be used in concrete cases of nuisance caused by beech martens and (2) the extent to which beech martens will then use the alternative shelters offered to them.
