Abstract

The muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) as well as the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) are being controlled in Flanders, but each one of them with a different method. For the muskrat, a mechanical control with traps and cages is being used, while the brown rat is being chemically controlled by means of anticoagulantia.
This difference can be explained by the difference in biology of both species, the context in which the control started, technical and organisational factors and general policy as well as national international legislation.
