Abstract

This paper gives a detailed overview of the distribution data of Oxythyrea funesta Poda 1761 in

Belgium and his temporal rang shifts. The species was common till around the middle of previous

century. Between 1950 and 1999, its distribution was retracted to the calcareous regions in the south

of Belgium. Finally, in the last two decades the species is again clearly expanding. Only at Den

Battelaer (Mechelen) it is clear that the species has re-established. We evaluate several hypothesis

for this historic and current range shift and conclude that the retraction and recolonisation are most

likely explained by a pathogen or a pollutant. Possibly the species has recolonized a large part of

Northern Europe starting from the Czech Republic. Other factors, like transport of flowers and soil

and global warming, might also have contributed to the European range shift.
